Bunting on Show in Mawnan

Sue Hewitt’s hearts and rainbows bunting

Instead of holding a day full of workshops to celebrate Get Creative Week as they did last year, Mawnan WI decided to issue a lighthearted and creative challenge to get members crafting at home. Alison Brooksbank, who led the initiative, suggested that membersshould produce a string of bunting and she identified four categories. Having provided a few tips and encouraged the use of a variety of materials, members were given two weeks to get busy!

The winner of the open category was Ginny Smeed with bunting made of large jigsaw pieces which reflected the activities which many of the members have been doing during lockdown; to show support of the NHS Sue Hewitt produced a winner with her hanging of hearts and rainbows; VE Day was celebrated by many members, but it was Jackie Whibley’s knitted flags which won the prize for this category; Carol Hurst leads Mawnan WI’s campaign to re-use and recycle plastic so perhaps it came as no surprise that her winning bunting was made from used crisp packets which she had been collecting for recycling.

Members made some very pretty bunting and showed their resourcefulness by using things which they already had at home. Hopefully they will keep them hanging for much longer.
