Ladock WI’s ‘Inspiring Women’ Christmas Tree

Ladock WI’s ‘Inspiring Women’ Christmas tree

This year, the members of Ladock WI decorated a Christmas tree for the festival at Ladock Church. They chose ‘Inspiring Women’ as the theme for their tree, and decorated it with ornaments depicting the women they find most inspiring. A reference book of the women featured was created for visitors to the Church.

The women featured included: The Virgin Mary, Jane Austen, Daphne du Maurier, Judi Dench, Rosa Parks (the First Lady of civil rights in the US), Malala Yousafzai (the Nobel Peace Laureate who stood up to the Taliban), Emily Hobhouse (a forgotten Cornish heroine who worked for human rights in South Africa), Michelle Obama, Angela Merkel, Evelyn Glennie (the inspirational deaf musician), Elizabeth Fry (the Quaker ‘angel of prisons’), Grace Darling (the brave girl who helped rescue shipwrecked sailors), Joyce Bennett (the first English woman to become an Anglican Priest), Victoria Matthews (the first female Anglican Bishop), Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Edith Cavell, Josephine Cochrane (inventor of the first practical dishwasher in 1886), Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Tanni Grey Thompson (Paralympic athlete), Valentina Tereshkova (the first woman in space), Adele, Eleanor Roosevelt, Diana Princess of Wales, Isadora Duncan, Helen Keller, Sarah Payne (child protection campaigner), Lady Dorothie Mary Evelyn Fielding-Moore and Mairi Lambert Gooden-Chisolm (the first two women awarded the WWI military medal for bravery), the Suffragettes, the Women’s Royal Air Force, the Women’s Royal Navy and Queen Alexandra’s Nursing Corps.

Now that’s inspiring!
