One Hundred Years of the WI in Mylor Bridge

Mermaids: Mylor and Flushing WI held a special celebratory event on Saturday to mark the 100 years since a branch of the WI was first formed in Mylor Bridge. Apart from a small gap, it has been running ever since and the members have been really pleased to see a significant increase in their membership over the last year.

In the morning, an open event, ‘Get to Know Your WI Better’, was held, welcoming the public to come in and meet the WI members, enjoy a tea or coffee, buy some baked goods, and browse the book stall and the stalls displaying some of the beautiful creative work the members have produced over the years.

Memorabilia from the group was displayed along with information about the many inspiring campaigns the WI has led. Along with a fun and educational stall about the Mermaids’ hedgehog campaign, free packets of wildflower seeds from the Eden Project were handed out as part of the WI’s Great Big Green Week activities.

The successful morning was followed by a classic Cornish celebratory cream tea for members which was attended by five Presidents, three of whom are currently members and two who attended as special guests, along with a local woman in her 90s from the early days of the organisation.
