Breastfeeding

The Equality Act 2010 stipulates that it is sex discrimination to treat a woman unfavourably because she is breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding mothers are protected in a range of public places including sports and leisure facilities, public buildings and restaurants.

An association must not discriminate, harass or victimise a person because she is breastfeeding by refusing membership or discriminating in provision of benefits, facilities or services.

For the reasons above, WIs are encouraged to treat this issue with sensitivity.
