Busy Times for Mawnan WI

There was a buzz of excitement amongst members of Mawnan WI when the news was spread that president, Sally Annan, would be interviewed on Radio Cornwall about the WI’s Green Hearts workshop. Mawnan WI has participated since in the Show the Love campaign since 2015 and this year, as part of their centenary celebrations, they hope to make 100 hearts with which to craft bomb the village on February 14th. Ellie Stacey, who led the session, organised everyone into groups gradually building up a production line. Supporting Mawnan WI’s commitment to reuse and recycle, the hearts were made of pre-used fabric stuffed with old tights! At the end of the session they were well on their way to reaching their target and everyone had had a fantastic time making hearts, eating homemade cake and having a good chat.

Members of Mawnan WI have also held a recent visit Helston Museum. The women were given a warm welcome by the curator and volunteers who guided the group through the different exhibits. There are some wonderful set pieces including a Victorian kitchen and a school room which didn’t look very different from the ones some members had experienced in their childhoods!

As if that weren’t enough, members also had a “Brewing Experience” when they visited St Austell Brewery this month. Tour guide Keagan led them through tutored beer tastings and explanations of the brewing process and history of St Austell Brewery. His commentary was entertaining and informative and the women enjoyed sampling six different brews including the well-known Proper Job and Tribute. This was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and members left being more aware of the sustainable and environmental policies of this long established local brewery.
