Flowers and Gardens visit to Cotehele

On a beautifully sunny May morning, a group of 20+ WI members met at Cotehele for a garden tour. The members first gathered in the Education Centre for homemade cake (WI style!) and coffee and tea. Senior Gardener James, gave the group a brief slide show and introduction to the gardens, including a precis of his career as a gardener, working at several other properties before coming to Cotehele.

The women then set off for a walking tour of the gardens, led by James and Apprentice Gardener Sophie. They explored the stunning Upper Garden with its formally planted terraces and the Mother Orchard and Old Orchard with their furry lichen-covered fruit trees. The early spring flowers were putting on a spectacular display. Some members then explored the Valley Garden, with its medieval stewpond and dovecote, giving panoramic views out to Calstock Viaduct.

James and Sophie provided a wealth of knowledge, explaining the grafting process and giving some clues as to this year’s Christmas garland!

Following the tour, some members lingered for lunch in The Barn Café, while others visited The Edgcumbe at Cothele Quay for their lunch.

The Flowers and Gardens Sub-Committee is a new group and was pleased to have such a positive response to this, the first event planned. If you would like to join the team and help plan future events, please email fandg@cornwallwi.org.uk.
