Happy Pride to All!

The WI is a place which welcomes and celebrates all women. Today, we kick off Pride month and wish a Happy Pride to all our LGBTQ+ members.

Globally, Pride Month is celebrated in June every year to celebrate LGBTQ+ people, and raise awareness of the inequalities and persecution they still face today in many parts of the world.

Pride started as a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots, a series of violent clashes between the police and the LGBTQ+ community in New York, as a reaction to systematic police oppression and raids on LGBTQ+ bars and clubs.

Each year, the WI’s logo is now changed for Pride Month to incorporate the rainbow LGBTQ+ Pride flag. This logo is displayed on the WI’s social media channels, as a celebration of the month and to show support to all our LGBTQ members. WIs are encouraged to also change their Facebook and Twitter profile photos to this logo for the month of June.

Here in Cornwall, most Pride events are held in August. Have a look at the Cornwall Pride website to see what’s going on in your area this year!

Keep an eye on the NFWI Facebook page for more content about Pride, and keep celebrating the WI’s dedication to inclusivity and diversity.
