For the past five years, Mawnan WI has raised funds to support the Children’s Hospice South West by holding its annual Garden Safari – so it was not surprising that many members were keen to visit when Little Harbour held an Open Day recently.
The hospice provides care for children with life-limiting conditions, from newborns to 21 year olds. Set in a tranquil rural area with panoramic views of the sea, Little Harbour immediately has a sense of being a home from home. The design of the building and its facilities are truly incredible – a great deal of care has been taken to avoid any semblance of a hospital, and close attention has been given to details in the choice of colours and furnishings. Outside, the gardens offer both places to relax and places to stimulate – Mawnan WI members were particularly struck by the Mermaid’s Cove Sensory Garden pictured here.
The visit was an emotional one which left the women full of admiration for the dedicated staff who care and support families in Cornwall offering respite for the whole family, a sibling service, end of life care and a bereavement service for as long as needed.
Mawnan WI’s Garden Safari 2019 will be held on Sunday 21st July from midday to 5pm, showcasing 12 gardens belonging to members and their friends. Tickets will be on sale in The Square, Mawnan Smith, on the day costing £5 for adults – children are free. WI homemade Cornish cream teas will be available and there will be a well-stocked plant stall.
