New CFWI Sub-Committee Members

New Floral Art & Gardening sub-committee member Mandy Nicholson of St Dominick WI

CFWI’s Floral Art & Gardening sub-committee would like to welcome new member Mandy Nicholson of St Dominick WI. Mandy is pictured here with her hanging basket at a recent Floral Art event at Bodmin Nursery.

Our Activity & Leisure sub-committee also has a new member – Anne Matthews of Mawnan WI.

We congratulate Anne and Mandy and hope they enjoy their new roles!

If you’re interested in joining one of our Federation sub-committees, please get in touch with the CFWI Office on (01872) 272843 or cfwi@btconnect.com. Whatever your area of interest, there’s a sub-committee that will suit you:

Our Activity & Leisure sub-committee’s  aim is to encourage active participation in activities. Recent events have included the Rosebowl Quiz and a boat trip on the Helford River. Coming up is a day all about family history and how to research your family tree.

The Combined Arts sub-committee organises events on topics such as singing, acting, dancing, painting and photography. If you attended the recent Soft Pastel workshop or the Mobile Phone Photography class, then you’ll know what members of the Combined Arts sub-committee get up to!

If you’re passionate about the environment, you may be interested in our Environment & Public Affairs sub-committee. Their remit also includes housing, local government, planning, transport, water, sewage, pollution, welfare of livestock, fisheries and food, the agricultural industry, conservation, health and public and international affairs. They recently held a trip to the Flicka Foundation Donkey Sanctuary and are running next year’s Operation Hedgehog competition.

Our Floral Art & Gardening sub-committee does what it says on the tin! From flower arranging to gardening and everything green in-between, this is a busy sub-committee. Recent events have included Winter Hanging Baskets, Horticultural Skills and Church Flower Arranging.

The Home Economics & Craft sub-committee plans craft days, cookery demonstrations and is always coming up with new ideas for events. Did you attend any of the always popular What’s In My Trolley? cookery demonstrations? This sub-committee will also be holding a series of Christmas craft workshops later this year.

If those don’t appeal, there are three other sub-committees with somewhat different remits. They don’t usually organise regular events, but serve extremely valuable roles within the Federation:

Exhibitions – These are the hardworking women who set up our marquee at the Royal Cornwall Show, and all the furnishings and displays at our Annual Council Meeting and Spring Countdown.

Trading Post – You’ll have seen this lovely team at their sales tables at the Royal Cornwall Show, Annual Council Meeting, Spring Countdown and other Federation events. They order and sell the gifts and stationery we sell at events, as well as at Chy Noweth.

Membership Support – This group is your WI Advisers, a priceless resource for WIs. The Membership Support sub-committee arranges training sessions for members, as well as offering friendship, guidance and support to WIs and their members. Trained by NFWI, the Advisers encourage women to become WI members and work to promote the WI throughout Cornwall.

And, of course, there’s always the Board of Trustees! As well as having special responsibilities in running our Federation, this busy team also organises events such as County Lunches, our Cake Craft & Camping Weekend, the Garden Party, theatre trips, travel outings, buffet lunches and much more.

See? Something for everyone!

If you’re interested in volunteering to be on a sub-committee, you’ll be offered the opportunity – with no obligation whatsoever – to sit on on a sub-committee meeting to find out what it’s all about. Any WI member is eligible to serve on a sub-committee. Serving on a sub-committee can sometimes mean a lot of work, but it is always rewarding and fun work in a very friendly environment.
