What a right royal get-together Newquay WI had recently at their Coronation celebration and May meeting combined.
The hall was festooned with bunting handmade by members Kathy and Trish. Trish also made a commemorative wreath; Treasurer Jacky spent many hours working on a crocheted Coronation blanket which was on display for all to admire; and a replica crown was made by a previous member. After a good sort out of the hall rooms, a beautiful portrait of Lady Molesworth-St Aubyn, Newquay WI’s founding President back in 1918, was discovered and was placed on display on the stage in a fitting position to view the festivities.
There were lots of tasty homemade nibbles, cakes and pastries for a buffet tea made and brought by the members, along with lashings of tea or coffee. The plan had been for members to have a cheeky glass of bubbly to toast the King, but the President left it behind!
The WI resolution for this year was discussed and voted on, and the cup and rose bowl for last year’s competition results were presented to the worthy winners. Two special presentations were then made: One to retiring President Anne, and one to previous Treasurer Jean for sorting the books for new Treasurer Jacky.
The members each took home a piece of rich, boozy celebration cake made by member Betty, and all members were presented with a hand printed tote bag as a gift from Newquay WI
Newquay WI’s resident Poet Laureate Lucie recited a Coronation poem she wrote, and President Lizzie read a beautiful piece she wrote for her late mum Rose who was also a Newquay WI member,
