From Crantock to Crowlas – Poppies Everywhere!

Crantock WI has led a community project ‘Remember Together’ (the theme of The Royal British Legion this year) and knitted and crocheted poppies.

They aimed for 1,000 and now have over 3,300 – and the poppies are still coming in! Poppies have arrived from friends of Crantock all over the country and who have joined members in the‘Knit-ins’ when on holiday here. Some people learnt to crochet for the first time and others picked up their knitting needles for the first time in many years.

The poppies will be set up all over Crantock Memorial Hall and the centre of the village on Saturday 26th October and they are being lit up by the Crantock Christmas Lights Committee. The Remembrance Day Service is held outside the Memorial Hall which will, this year, provide an appropriate backdrop for the community to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Members of Crowlas and Ludgvan WI have also been busy knitting and crocheting over the last few months. Among them, they have produced almost 3,000 poppies.

All shapes and all sizes of poppies have been created, with 2,500 in the traditional red of the RBL Poppy Symbol. However there are over 1,000 black poppies, to remember our Commonwealth friends, white for the innocent bystanders who were affected by the conflicts and purple for all the animals who unquestioningly helped in the conflicts.

The drapes are now progressing well and sewing-on will continue until 31st October with the display at Ludgvan Church, to be ready for Remembrance Day.

  1. Well done to all those who have made those beautiful poppies! I look forward to the pictures, and am proud that some of them I made.
