Spring Countdown today!

CFWI Chairman Margaret Johnson with Spring Countdown guest speaker Cal Major

What a day we all had in Redruth at today’s Spring Countdown.

In the morning, we heard speakers talk about both of this year’s potential resolutions – ‘the decline in local buses’ and ‘don’t fear the smear’. All the speakers were excellent, but members were particularly moved by the story told by Lou, a young woman who has had cervical cancer and who encouraged us all not to fear the smear!

We also heard from representatives from the Eden Project who told us all about The Big Lunch and gave us all great ideas about how WIs can hold their own Big Lunches.

After our own (little) lunch break, we reconvened and heard from Tom Shelley of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Tom told us about Operation Hedgehog and got everyone enthused about 2020’s Allsop Cup competition which will involve surveying hedgehog populations in our own neighbourhoods.

Pippa Stilwell, our Climate Ambassador, gave us a talk about climate change and how we can lobby our MPs.

Then it was time for the highlight of the day – a talk by Cal Major, a self-described ‘ocean advocate’. She spoke with such passion about her stand up paddleboarding expeditions which she has undertaken to raise awareness about plastic pollution. Cal has paddleboarded around the Cornish coast, around the Isle of Skye and, most recently, the entire length of Great Britain. She also emphasised the importance of speaking about mental health, a topic which touched us all. For such a young woman, Cal has achieved so much!

It was a great end to a great day.
