Harrowbarrow & Metherell Members Learn about Energy and Waste

Last November a group of Harrowbarrow & Metherell WI members and friends headed to see the Devonport Energy from Waste Facility operated by MVV Environment Devonport Ltd.

Members were ably led by Community Liaison Manager, Jane Ford. After some rigorous Health and Safety demands before the tour along with an enlightening presentation, they all donned high visibility vests, hard hats and safety goggles.

The tour included visits to the hopper bay where trucks unload their refuse, to the drying area, the boiler platform, walking on metal mesh flooring with the ground floor clearly visible 8m below, and finally the control centre where the women saw that the whole plant was computer controlled. It was explained that the energy generated provided electricity to heat and light Devonport Dockyard as well as feed back into the National Grid. The final debris is used in road construction. Nothing is wasted. Nothing in the plant’s catchment area goes to landfill.

What an informative visit!
