On Thursday 29th August members of Zennor, St Dennis and Truro WIs went up to Penmount Crematorium to help with maintaining some young trees, planted by Forest for Cornwall (F4C). In April we had helped with clearing weeds, mulching and re-tying stakes from the avenue of trees at the entrance to the site. This time we tackled the larger plantation on the top of the hill looking towards the South West, where some of the trees had been blown over and needed re-staking and straightening out. The weather and the view were glorious and we had a lovely morning, Stakes, ties, gloves and secateurs were provided by Alex Forrester from F4C, who also did the heavy work of hammering in the stakes. Even so we didn’t have time to stake every tree that needed it, so we have undertaken to make a return trip at the end of September to finish the job.
Since their inception in 2019, Forest for Cornwall have facilitated the planting of over 1 million trees. They are a small team working with a wide range of Cornwall residents, from farmers and landowners to town and parish councils and individuals. Last year WIs across Cornwall planted free trees provided by F4C under the scheme ‘WI Members Plant Trees’, with such success that we are now planning a re-run of the scheme, scheduled to start in October. If your WI missed the chance to plant a tree last year, or would like to plant some more, keep a lookout for more details shortly!
