Royal Cornwall Show Competitions … A Month Left to Enter!

The closing date to send in your application form to enter this year’s Royal Cornwall Show competitions is 31 March! We hope you’ll be entering! It’s a great way to unleash your creativity and work either with a group of WI friends (for the RCS Cup competition) or on your own (for the Barbara Reed Trophy competition and floral arts classes).

This year’s Royal Cornwall Show Cup Competition is organised by the Arts and Leisure Sub-Committee and is based on this wonderfully evocative poem:

Sea Fever by John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

This year’s floral art competitions are also based on a sea theme. Please read and download a schedule/application here.

The Barbara Reed Trophy competition is, as always, organised by our Cookery and Craft Sub-Committee and, this year, invites members to create a bag from recycled material. Read and download the schedule/application here.

Closing Date for all Royal Cornwall Show competition entries: Sunday 31 March 2024.
